Tui Na (pronounced “twee nah”), which literally means “push” (tui) and “lift and squeeze” (na), is a form of Asian bodywork that functions similarly to acupuncture. Tui Na is a combination of acupressure, massage and body manipulation techniques that realign the musculoskeletal structures, and is used to remove blockage that prevents free flow of qi and to restore balance back in the body. And like acupuncture, by removing obstruction, promoting proper circulation, and restoring balance, the body is encouraged to naturally heal itself. Similarly to acupuncture, Tui Na can treat an array of various conditions, such as digestive disorders and respiratory problems. However, it is especially effective for addressing musculoskeletal issues, such as muscle pain, joint pain, nerve pain and sports injuries. Because Tui Na is a vigorous form of hands-on bodywork, it should be avoided in patients with osteoporosis, fractures, infectious diseases, skin disorders, and open wounds.
