Electro acupuncture, better known as electrical stimulation or e-stim, is the process of sending a small, adjustable, electrical current to the needles inserted into the body. This is done to continuously stimulate the specific acupuncture points throughout the treatment to enhance the functions of the points. E-stim is beneficial for a variety of conditions, especially muscular pain or weakness, neurological disorders, and women’s health issues. There are two components to electro acupuncture: the e-stim device and small cords or leads with clamps that look like tiny car battery jumper cables. During e-stim, one end of the cord is plugged into the e-stim machine and the clamps on the opposite end are attached to the shaft of the needles. The patient will feel a mild pulsating sensation at the site of the needle. Please inform your practitioner if you have a pacemaker or heart condition as the use of e-stim is contraindicated in these conditions.
